Operation Santa: Adopt-A-Family Print
Monday, 22 November 2010

GREETINGS, P.A.S.S. Members,

It’s that time of the season… THE SEASON OF GIVING!

For the first time ever, PASS will be taking part in Operation Santa, an Adopt-A-Family program for Christmas. In this program, unfortunate families were nominated by friends, co-workers, or relatives in hopes that service organizations like us can help spark a wonderful holiday this year during these families’ financial burdens and hardships. This year, we will be bringing “Christmas” to two families, both with 5 family members total. They both have been nominated by people who care deeply about them and truly believe they are people who will appreciate all of the gifts we can provide.

If you are interested in being involved in this service project,

you can participate in one, two, or three ways:

  • *You can provide ANY kind of donations, preferably items from the Wish-list, Christmas decorations, gift-wrapping, gift-wrapping supplies, and monetary donations for bigger items
  • *You can help gift wrap the presents during Week 10 on Monday or Tuesday
  • *You can help deliver the presents to the families and witness the act of love and giving. The delivery time is scheduled before Finals and before Winter Break on Wednesday, December 1st at 6:30PM

*PLEASE CHECK THE “EVENTS CALENDAR” for more information

While I know we may struggle with our own financial burdens and struggles, we are so privileged. I know you may be reading this and may think you don’t have the time to be involved, but think about how YOUR help can actually impact a child, an adult, a whole family… FOR THE BETTER. Deep inside each of us we want to see positive change surrounding us. Now is your chance to be a part of a wonderful experience. Whether it’s donating a small toy, donating $1, giving your time to gift-wrap, providing a ride to deliver gifts, or simply telling friends to help donate… EVERY ACTION COUNTS.

Below is the information of each family:

FAMILY #1: Nominee Gloria Lopez

Family Members (5): 2 adults (Gloria and boyfriend) & 3 girls ages 7, 4, and 3.

FAMILY BACKGROUND:

“Gloria has a 7 year old daughter of her own and has been mother to her boyfriend’s daughters (ages 3 & 4) for the last few years since the father was awarded custody due to their mother’s drug issues. The family is in transition from Welfare-to-Work, so there is absolutely NO $ for Christmas.”

WISH-LIST #1:

Family: christmas decorations and a tin of holiday cookies/chocolates

Aylani (7 years): any musical instrument (maybe a keyboard), children books in Spanish, clothing size 8 in pants, size 7-8 in tops

Amari (3 years): kitchen and tea set items, clothing size 3T

Lyric (4 years): learning puzzles (shapes, colors, alphabets, etc), clothing size 4T

FAMILY #2: Nominee Julie Flores

Family Members (5): 2 adults (Julie and her mother) & 3 girls ages 16, 14, and 6.

FAMILY BACKGROUND:

“Julie is a hard worker and is such a giving person.  She puts everyone, especially her children before herself.  She told me a story that there have been times when they don't have much food in the house and she will make dinner and before serving herself she will  let her children have seconds if they want and even finish the food.  She would rather know that her kids’ tummies are full then even have a bite of any food herself.  Besides my own mother she is one of the most caring selfless people i know.  She has recently been struggling with paying bills, and I heard her say that this was going to be a difficult xmas and the kids may not get anything at all this year.”

WISH-LIST #2:

Family: christmas decorations and a tin of holiday cookies/chocolates

(16 years): any age-related arts and crafts, fav colors: maroon and navy blue

(14 years): any age-related arts and crafts, fav colors: purple and pink

(6 years): any age-related arts and crafts, fav colors: purple and pink

***I will be providing a Christmas card for each family.

Officers, members and donors are free to write a message.

I hope you really do take time to think about how fortunate you are compared to others. You may not be able to see the struggles that many of these families deal with on a daily basis, but I’m sure you can empathize. It only takes a few seconds for you to decide whether or not you want to help. So what are you waiting for?

PLEASE EMAIL ME ASAP if you would like to participate. Let's make this Christmas one the family will never forget :)

Cheers,

April Domingo

Memory Walk and Light the Night Walk Print
Saturday, 06 November 2010

Two recent PASS service projects coordinated by Yvonne Lam were: The

Memory Walk on Saturday, October 23 and The Light the Night Walk on

Friday, November 5. Great appreciation goes to Yvonne and those who

volunteered to participate in any of these service projects!

MEMORY WALK

Volunteers joined The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk aimed to raise

awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The

Memory Walk took place in Balboa Park.

LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK

Members and officers joined the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to raise funds

for people battling leukemia. Each year communities across the United

States come together to support lifesaving leukemia research. The Light

the Night Walk is an inspirational evening that includes a leisurely

stroll of 2 miles where volunteers carry illuminated balloons to support

the survivors of leukemia as well as to commemorate the loss of loved

ones. This event took place in the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Thank you for your participation, everyone!

Feeding America and Ronald McDonald House Print
Thursday, 28 October 2010
Here are some pictures from the "Feeding America" & "Ronald McDonald House" Service Projects that took place on Saturday, October 16th. Thank you to Hanson and Amy for coordinating these two service projects! We appreciate all of the members and officers time and hard work!

FEEDING AMERICA

Hanson Lee's "Feeding America" Service Project was a great success!

PASS members and officers helped tackle poverty in San Diego by packaging and distributing food so agencies can sell it at an affordable price for low income communities. Feeding America is a hunger-relief charity that sends 1.2 million pounds of food per month to those in need.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

Amy Triano's "Ronald McDonald House" Service Project was hard work, but fun! PASS members and officers helped organize and rearrange the storage room so staff would be able to conveniently locate items. The Ronald McDonald House is a place that caters to children when they undergo extensive and lengthy hospital treatments. This place also allows families with very ill children at Rady Children's Hospital to stay for a very small fee to allows parents to remain close to their children during treatment.
